Leaving The View
Posted June 20, 2013 in IBM Lotus DominoBack in 2010, The View (www.eview.com) magazine approached me and asked me if I was interested in becoming a technical advisor to the publication. Being a long-time IBM Lotus Domino developer (a really, really long time) and a speaker at several View Domino Developer conferences, I of course said yes. We spent some time discussing what they needed from me and we decided that a series of articles on mobile development for Domino would be a great fit for my area of expertise. I was onboard.
The Solution to My Domino Server Configuration Problem
Posted April 19, 2013 in IBM Lotus DominoThanks to all of you who helped out last week as I struggled to get my IBM Lotus Domino server to accept HTTP PUT and DELETE requests. I posted two articles about my issues, you can access them here:
Update on My Domino Server Problems
Posted April 14, 2013 in IBM Lotus DominoThanks to all of you who helped out last week trying to help me fix my Domino configuration problem. Tom Verleysen and Michael Dudding suggested creating an Internet Sites document which I thought made sense based upon what I'd read on the Internet but wasn't sure exactly how to implement it. I followed the instructions I was given (I think) and setup the following:
Domino Server 405 Error
Posted April 10, 2013 in IBM Lotus DominoI'm trying to wrap up an article series for The View (www.eview.com) on developing Sencha Touch applications for IBM Lotus Domino and ran into a problem that I can't seem to find a solution for – can you help me out? Please?
Rhomobile & Domino
Posted April 19, 2012 in IBM Lotus DominoAs part of my role as a technical advisor to the View I decided a long time ago to start writing a series of articles demonstrating all of the different possible ways to mobilize a Notes or Domino application. I had a bunch of ideas and a bunch of different tools I wanted to play with, so I got to work. The cool thing about this was that I wanted to learn these tools, but had so many other things going that I just couldn't find the time to do it. Fortunately, writing a magazine article about a particular piece of technology is a great way to motivate someone like me to learn the technology.
Another Reason I'm Not Going to Lotusphere
Posted January 3, 2012 in IBM Lotus DominoI wasn't allowed to talk about this until now, but I wanted to share with you another of the reasons I'm not going to Lotusphere this year.
Not Going to Lotusphere 2012
Posted December 21, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoFor the first time in 16 years, I'm not going to be in Orlando for IBM Lotus Lotusphere. I've attended every Lotusphere but one and presented at many of them. It's been a wonderful experience for me and I'm sad for it to end, but I couldn't justify going this year. I hear from others, more and more people are in the same boat as me.
A New RESTful Service
Posted September 7, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoI have published several articles on this site that illustrated different types of web services for Domino that I have used in some mobile applications. Domino easily supports XML-based web services and platforms such as BlackBerry and Windows Mobile have inherent capabilities that allow applications to consume XML-based web services. Other platforms on the other hand don't have built-in support for XML-based web services, so I've had to implement RESTful services for applications built for other platforms such as Android and iOS. More recently I've decided to make a change to the RESTful agent I've been using for my applications and thought I'd document the changes here.
Review of Teamstudio Unplugged
Posted June 16, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoThe View just published my review of Teamstudio Unplugged, a mobile application platform for IBM Lotus Notes/Domino applications. The platform allows you to take an existing Notes application and mobilize it to the Unplugged client. Unplugged is essentially a mobile replication engine for Notes and BlackBerry (today, support for Android and iOS is coming soon).
Kryos AppXtender Shipped
Posted April 4, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoI've been so busy since Lotusphere (ya, I know - that was months ago) that I never got around to letting all of you know that Kryos AppXtender shipped in February. If you haven't heard about AppXtender, it's pretty cool - it's a tool you can use to mobilize your existing Domino databases. The folks at Kryos asked me to be a bete tester for the platform and I really enjoyed working with it. I demonstrated the platform in my session at Lotusphere 2011 and published an article in the View that showed how it works - View subscribers can read the article online.
BlackBerry Widgets & Domino
Posted April 2, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoFor those of you who are interested in BlackBerry Widgets (BlackBerry WebWorks) and how you can use them to talk to IBM Lotus Domino applications, The View just published an article I wrote called BlackBerry Widgets — A Fast, Easy Way to Mobilize Your Domino Applications. In the article, I use the RESTful agent I illustrated on this site to build a BlackBerry Widget that talks to the Domino service. It was a fun app to write and I'm very proud of the article.
Google Analytics & Domino
Posted March 14, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoIf you have a public-facing web site that you maintain, you're probably aware of the capabilities provided by the free Google Analytics (GA) service. Essentially it's a web-based web metrics application that you can use to understand a whole bunch of stuff about your site's visitors.
Domino & Dashcode
Posted March 10, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoAs you know (or may not know) I've been working on a series of articles for The View on mobile development for IBM Lotus Domino. I've tried to identify each of the ways you can mobilize Domino and Notes applications then write an article about it. I proposed a series of about 15 articles and the most recent article (#5 in the series) was just published today. It's called Mobilize Notes Applications to iPhone and iPad Using Apple Dashcode and it was a lot of fun to write. The article essentially shows you how to connect a web application created using Apple's Dashcode web development environment to a Domino database. The article shows you step by step how to build the application and test it on the iPhone simulator.

Mobilizing Domino Data Using REST Part 1
Posted January 19, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoThe first part of a series on mobilizing IBM Lotus Domino data for mobile platforms that don't directly support XML-based Web Services (like Android and the iPhone).
Lotusphere 2011 Session
Posted January 3, 2011 in IBM Lotus DominoMy Lotusphere 2011 session with Rob Wunderlich is BP209 and entitled Delivering Domino to Mobile Devices: More Stupid Tricks. The session is scheduled for Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 1:30 PM.
Getting Ready for Lotusphere 2011
Posted December 28, 2010 in IBM Lotus DominoIn preparation for Lotusphere 2011, I've been working on some demos for the session Rob Wunderlich and I will be giving at next year's conference. One of the things I want to be able to show is how to use Apple's Dashcode web application development tool to access Notes data plus how to build a BlackBerry Widget that does the same thing.
Additional View Articles
Posted September 26, 2010 in IBM Lotus DominoI just finished my second and third articles for the View (www.eview.com). The second article is an introduction to mobile development for Domino and focuses on web development. The third article extends the second and talks about native mobile development for Domino and includes Hybrid and MEAP applications. It was a lot of fun to write these articles. I started with an idea and as I started writing, the article got bigger and bigger and bigger. When I submitted it, my editor immediately started talking about splitting it into two parts. This was good because it allowed me to extend the second part and make it more complete. As I wrapped the first version up, I started omitting content because I knew it was going to be too long. Splitting it allowed me to make it much more complete.
View Article on Mobile Domino Development
Posted September 24, 2010 in IBM Lotus DominoI'm just putting the final touches on an article I wrote for the View. The article covers options for mobile development using Domino. The article ended up being so long, that they had to split it into two parts. Part 1 highlights web development options and part 2 covers native and mobile platform (MEAP) applications. Essentially this will be the second (and third) article in the series that covers everything related to mobilizing Lotus Domino data.
Lotusphere 2010 Presentation Posted
Posted July 10, 2010 in IBM Lotus DominoGoogle told me this morning that someone posted my AD114 slide decks from Lotusphere 2010 on a slide sharing web site: here. The presentation covers how to build rich client applications that talk to Lotus Domino databases. It's something I've been presenting on for several years now (at Lotusphere and the View conferences). What I've done is build a Domino Web Service then showed how to build BlackBerry and Windows Mobile clients that talk to the database. This year I added Android (for Lotusphere) and iPhone (for the View conference) versions of the application although I wasn't able to get the complete iPhone application working in time for the conference.
